On the island of Naxos is the huge marble portal called the ‘Portara’, an archaeological icon standing a full six metres high. In ancient Greece, it stood at the entrance to a temple to Apollo. It faced the island of Delos, which according to mythology was the birthplace of Apollo. Standing at the grand marble portal, looking out to sea, one wonders what the people of ancient Greece made of it all.
Ancient Greece
Within sight of the Portara on Naxos, is the small island of Delos. In mythology, this was the birthplace of Apollo, the god of music, prophecy, and war. People pleaded with Apollo to ward off evil. Delos then, despite its small size, was a place of pilgrimage. Temples and statues were erected on the island. Today, Delos is a destination for archaeological Greece tours and one of Greeceās most important historical sites. The grandeur of the marble Lions of Delos and the Agora market square reflect the importance of the place. You can reach the island by ferry from nearby Mykonos, Naxos, or Paros.
Healing on the Island of Kos
To the west of Naxos, is the island of Kos. The island was of strategic importance in Ancient Greek times, as it oversaw and protected the Dodecanese group of islands. Kos is home to one of best examples of an Asklepion temple. These were temples built around Hellenic Greece for the teaching and practice of healing and medicine. There is an ancient tree near the port of Kos where Hippocrates is said to have conducted his teachings.
The Cult of Athena
The island of Rhodes, in the southern Aegean Sea, is known for its glorious beeches, ancient towns and delicious food and wine. But it is also a destination for those looking for archaeological insights into the ancient world. The Temple of Athena Linda is located there. In Greek mythology, Athena is daughter of Zeus and is the Goddess of Wisdom and Military Strategy. An important Cult of Athena flourished on the Island of Rhodes.
Greece Cultural Tours
A key destination for Greece cultural tours is Crete. The island is large enough to have its own identity and history. The Minoan civilisation developed on the island and is the first urbanised culture in Europe. The remains of the Palace of King Minos at Knossos, and the nearby Museum of Heraklion, are of extraordinary interest. Learn about the Greek myth of King Minos and his labyrinth. This was the labyrinth that was constructed to imprison the Minotaur. See sublime labyrinth patterns on silver coins at the museum.
Island-Hopping and History
Low-cost island-hopping tours often visit Mykonos, Naxos, and Kos, and while there might be a focus on beaches and nature on these holidays, the archaeology can give an insight into the lives and cultures of ancient civilisations.
